Java One Day One

After a three year hiatus I am once again in attendance at Java One. I am having the same problem this year that I had in years past. So many technologies, so little time. For a computer geek like myself, however, it's a great problem to have.

I have decided at least to attend all the Jini technical sessions and BOFs. I used to work in the Jini group. It's great to catch up on what's new and get the chance to visit with some old friends.

Today's technical session given by Van Simmons was all about using Jini in a project to develop a grid computing application for Wall Street. Using a JavaSpace and a master/worker pattern Van and his team have made the seemingly impractical task of performing analysis on 18,000 different securities into something that can be performed in a reasonable amount of time.

On another note:
I caught Jonathan Schwartz's talk today in the General Session. He impressed me as a knowledgable and interesting speaker. He talked about the "monetizing" of Java and how that is done. He talked about the Java market, how large it is and how it has grown. My only confusion is that it seems that the monetizing of Java is still benefiting other companies more than it is benefiting Sun. In the words of another great speaker "Never have so many owed so much to so few." (Sir Winston Churchill)
