RFID tags to tell a washer/dryer how to wash clothesPosted by lucastorri on January 10, 2008 at 10:17 AM PST
This is great! Technology to help us with domestic tasks. Designer Samgmin Bae has designed the clothTag, an RFID tag that could communicate with RFID enabled washers, dryers, irons, presses, and dry cleaning equipment, adjusting all settings automatically. You will just need to load your clothes, add detergent and shut the lid. It looks even prettier than the normal labels: Like the designer says "I find it surprising 70% of people don’t read the care labels and when they do, it’s usually too late". I personally don't know anything about cloth labels, so this would be a great help to avoiding me to destroy clothes =P Notice found at Make Blog »

Now that's a little oversimplification - you can just throw everything in one batch and have the washer / dryer respect the settings on each one of the clothes. You still need some sorting process to have the batches grouped by the relevant settings. Perhaps select a setting on the washer / dryer and have it beep when a piece that doesn't match is loaded?

Hello kirillcool, that's a good idea, but for now I'm not programming washers =P

Modern washing machines are available in two configurations: top loading and front loading. From the structural point of view of washer parts , the top loading design, most popular in Australia, Canada, the United States , places the clothes in a vertically-mounted perforated basket that is contained within a water-retaining tub, with a propeller-like agitator in the center of the bottom of the basket. Clothes are loaded through the top of the machine, which is covered with a hinged door. During the wash cycle, the outer tub is filled with water sufficient to suspend the clothing freely in the basket, and the movement of the agitator pulls the clothing downward in the center towards the agitator paddles.
