A Second Language for the JVM!!

Graham Hamilton today said that with Visual Basic, we now have a second language for the JVM! As if that's new!
One web page lists nearly 200 languages, most custom or unknown (Jacl, E, yoyo) but many well known (Ada, COBOL, forth).
I suppose for marketing reasons this might be a good thing to say because the market has ignored this. And Graham is right that extending the VM to support other kinds of languages is a very good thing to do. But let's not forget the actual state of the world.

I wish Sun would make an official C# for the JVM. Then they could finally stop copying more of C# into each new release of the Java Language Specification.

I'd take the view that both languages (C# & Java) are evolving rather than copying features off each other.
Anyway, VB on JVM is certainly fun - now if we just get Matisse to work with the language, NetBeans will probably become as Express as, if not more than, Visual Studio 2005 ;-)

(a) To be fair to Graham, he actually mentioned that there were other languges, but then shifted to this mode. I now suspect that he meant that VB was the first one Sun would support directly.
(b) If one is to talk about copying, C# started out as a copy of Java with some of the worst parts of C++ added back in (the preprocessor, for example). I certainly got a chuckle out of the accusation.

The big deal is not another VM language, but another which is supported (in some fashion) by Sun--not sure how much this will mean, but it's an important step forward. Many of the 200 languages you mention have small or no communities using them, as far as I can tell, and it's not clear how many have ongoing support from any corporations (who can provide funding, engineers, etc.). So this is a good thing--although, BASIC is a little bit of an odd target. Patrick

Either Microsoft or Mono could also make the JVM a target for C#. Personally, I think the JVM could use good C and Fortran compilers more than C#, although C# would be handy.

Um. Java 5 most certainly copied C#/.NET features.
I also agree that having C, C++, Fortran, and C# support would all be nice.
But official VB support could be very interesting.

What do you mean with a second language for the JVM, a second language that is supported by Sun JVM's?
What would be realy nice, is to be able to load .net dll files with the JVM (System.loadLibrary).
