All I hear everyone talking about in the community these days is "Open Sores". Man, get a bandage for it and move on already.

  • Chet, you'd better have some nice technical blog post handy to make up for this not so funny joke. We have not seen your other non jokes in a while now.

  • Mikeazzi: Most of my technical writing energy is being poured into a book right now, hopefully published at JavaOne. All I have left in the coffer is jokes (some funnier than others...). I'm hoping to do more on the applet-jax thing soon, and I have some other graphics and performance-related topics in mind, but they'll have to wait until the book content is done...

  • you should do some previews of your book here. The title has me intrigued, now I want to see some content.

  • leouser:

Thanks for your interest; I hope it's something you'll find compelling beyond the "Filthy Rich Clients" title (although that continues to be my favorite part of the book). We've actually discussed the content a bit on a group site for the book: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/filthy_rich_clients/. Here's a brief outline that we chucked out there (but which is still valid):

    The basic outline is:

    The Beginning
Graphics for GUI Developers (Swing/2D fundamentals)
    Animation fundamentals
    Timing Framework
    Effects
    Effects
    Effects
    Some French Poetry by Romain*
    Effects
    Effects
    Effects
    The End

    (* optional)

I think the "Graphics for GUI Developers" section (which so far represents about half of the book) should be quite good for anyone doing Swing development that wants to know more about how it all works and how to make it work even better. It covers things like the Swing painting model, use of Java 2D, performance tips, etc.

The animation sections (where my head has been at lately) should get people up to speed on animation basics as well as where the Timing Framework is currently at and where it's going.

The Effects sections are Romain specials; need we say more?

Now, if we can just finish the darn thing...

By the way, we'll be talking about some of this stuff at JavaPolis in Antwerp in 2 weeks, for anyone that happens to be in the area. December in Belgium; it's gonna be waffle...
