The New to Java Programming Center has recently been redesigned to accommodate more articles and tutorials, community information, and has been organized so the information you need is easy to find. If you are new to the Java platform, you can use the New to Java Programming Center to get your computer set up with the Java platform, learn the syntax of the Java programming language, and learn how to develop applications for desktops, the web, or mobile devices. The information listed and linked to the New to Java Programming Center is free. In addition, it lists links to Sun courses and certification training that you can buy. »

If you are new to java there are several possibilities to start off. One of them could be Dana Nourie's solution that leads you to the official page of Sun Microsystems where you can find step by step instructions on how to install and use java. The nice thing is that sun has a huge collection of articles, howtos and terminology references, but once you will start understanding the basics, a good idea would be to take simple codes written in java and start understanding what, how and why the person that wrote it used that specific code. https://cisco.hosted.jivesoftware.com/index.jspa?ciscoHome=true?utm_sour...
