Integrating java.net

I came across an interesting blog entry today (see URL reference) that refers to a Sun Java tech tip for generating custom taglets. The example shows linking to Javapedia page for examples. This is slick and deserves some attention, I think. Having javadoc web pages point to examples that are community created is great. In fact, I like this idea so much that I think I'll borrow it for the work I'm doing with XDoclet generation of Ant task documentation. We've struggled a little to find a way to integrate example usage of Ant tasks into the documentation that will be automatically generated - should it be embedded in the source code? should there be an external file that gets pulled into the generated artifacts? Better yet, put examples on a wiki and let the community evolve it, yet link to the wiki pages directly from the official documentation.... yes, I like it!

What about offline documentation?
Good question! I envision some type of build process for release software to pull in the a snapshot of the wiki pages at build time. Thoughts on alternatives? It is handy to have documentation when you don't have net access.

wget does that just fine.
Its available on every unix box, and available with the unix tools for Windows as well.

Good catch!
This is a great way to increase community involvement and collaboration on a project. I will look into how we can make this available for all projects on java.net. We are constantly looking for new ways to promote and increase collaboration. Great idea! Keep them coming!!

Wiki editing, version control for releases
Hi,

Seeing examples as one outcome from a project that I rely on, I would most often prefer some sort of quality assurance as well as configuration management. A link to a Wiki for those who dares and for feedback.Ant built and test Wiki snapshots and put into CVS (or whatever) if OK.

"Releases" then contains tested examples under version control.

Maybe too complex...
