Macs everywhere ... almost.

The first conference I attended after getting my TiBook last year was O'Reilly's Open Source Convention, and I was amazed to see more Macs than any other kind of laptop there. JavaOne is a slightly different group of folks, of course, and I don't think Macs dominate here. But they're in the running. You see them everywhere you look, being used by attendees and presenters. James Gosling is just one example.
How times have changed. Tim O'Reilly is right that the Mac is now the alpha geek's machine, and with this kind of developer adoption, the great apps for OS X are going to flow ever faster. Part of the reason for Mac uptake among developers is OS X's BSD underpinnings, and part is just the stability and great networking support. But another important factor is Apple's commitment to the Java platform. Right here, a couple of years ago, Steve Jobs committed to making OS X the best Java development platform on the planet. Apple is well on the way to fulfilling that commitment.
Why, then, when Jonathan Schwartz emphasized Sun's commitment to Java on the desktop in Tuesday's opening keynote, did he mention Linux ... but not the Mac?

Macs have gone geek mainstream
It seems like Mac's are way more popular amoung techies and developers than before. I think this is because OS X is Unix and therfore has much appeal to the very technically inclined. I own a Mac, not that I'm a Mac fanatic, but I needed a Unix box, didn't have time to fiddle with Linux, didn't want to spend the $$ for Solaris, OS X is a great alternative. Mac has really good built in Java support. It seems though there may be some friction between Sun and Mac, there is still a big problem in that Mac does not supprt Java3D, it is the only major operating system that does not. I find it incomprehensible that there is no Java3D support for Mac, even though Sun is aggresivley promoting Java3D for commerial game development.

In the Sun's Shadow
Sun ports Java to Solaris on Sun hardware.
Sun ports Java to Linux on Sun hardware.
Sun ports Java to Winblose because Microsloth will mess it up and because most Sun sales dudes carry Winblose laptops.
Sun doesn't see MacOS X on their radar. It's up to Apple to try do the work.

Techie Chic
I think there exists an appeal among developers to adopt the least popular technologies. True techies are always using alien equipment, always baffling the commoner (I say this lightly). Sure, OSX is an excellent OS, true, but it's commercial obscurity gives it a sort of flare as well - "I have a Mac. I am above Windows PCs".
I'm not saying this is the only reason why Macs seem to be 'everywhere'.
Certainly, even without much support from Sun, it is the developer community which will decide the direction Java takes - and, after all, Java is 'universal', so OS discussions aren't really that relevant.

Java on Macs
OS X is a great platform for java development and no doubt that will have some impact even on Mac sales... Geeks are probably early adopters - but others will no doubt follow.
With this in mind, not only does it behove Apple well to listen to the Java developer community, at least with half an ear, but it really is time for Sun to grok the percentage of TiBooks on display at a few developer conferences, and consequentially deliver way better Mac support. And that goes for a whole slew of tool developers as well.
Continue to 'Develop with Pleasure'!

Macs have gone geek mainstream
Sun could care less if there is a Java3D for the Mac -- actually I'd bet they like there not being one, all the more reason to get a Sun instead.
The only way there will be a Java3D for the Mac is if you and others let Apple know how critical it is.
[Same goes for Java3D on HPUX and AIX. The difference is that HP and IBM see the intersection of Java and 3D as important. Applet still does not.]
