Java's Inferiority Complex?

Posted by johnm on November 25, 2003 at 09:43 AM | Comments (1)

The TechnoTourette blogger writes I don't want to hear about it Mr. dotnet and that got me thinking about how Sun and so many Java folks react to the dreded "Evil Empire" that is MS. Is the incessant chatter about Microsoft and it's products by various Java "celebrities" just a sign of an inferiority complex or is it a manifestation of a completely rational fear?

You seem to have missed the point. There's a big difference between cross-pollination and fear. Technologically, there are things (both good and bad) that each group has borrowed from the other. Modulo the typical "religious" wars, that's a reasonably good discussion. However, there is a strong undertone even in many of the technical discussions of fear of MS and its products dominating the landscape. At the level of chatter about Java as a platform vs. .Net as a platform and higher into the community and business ramifications, the fear/inferiority complex (at the heart of my question) manifests itself as various forms of marketing hype (aka "posturing") and mud-slinging (and lawsuits :-).
