J2SE v1.5.0-alpha availability with JSR-166 updates

Posted by johnm on December 28, 2003 at 02:44 PM | Comments (7)

Rather than being forced to register at JavaLobby to be able to get access to the release, you can download the Java 2 SDK, Standard Edition v1.5.0 alpha release directly from Sun.

People interested in the JSR-166 Concurrency additions should note that the Tiger alpha release does not contain the latest version of the package. You can get the latest version from the JSR 166 resources web site.

  • Shouldn't we all WANT to register at JavaLobby?
If it weren't for JavaLobby, this download probably wouldn't be available.

I'm guessing that if everyone wanted to, then they would have to force people to!

The question is WHY should we have to register at javalobby in order to get a free distribution of software created by someone else?

I support the use of registration as a means for the owner of IP to manage an opt-in license agreement process for their IP. This does not seem to be the case.

I respect JavaLobby and think they are a quality site and offer a ton of value to the Java community. It just appears like they are acting more like a JavaTollBooth than a JavaLobby with this one.

Isn't it great that people can read this discussion without having to register? ;)

  • It's the beta
the filename of the file you download says it's a beta-version

Don't you just love well-managed releases to the public? :-)

Can anyone tell me why JavaLobby is in charge of distributing 1.5 for now? Why didn't Sun just put a link on their front page of java.sun.com??? Why go through someone else? What's the special relationship? Why JavaLobby?

When we deal with people instead of with computers the things we _can_ do does not always equal the things we are allowed (or should) do.

Your attitude is the cause that I now have to lock my doors even if I go to the neighbors for an hour or two. The fact that I left my door open, or my bike unlocked does not mean I invite everyone in..

And if you are not convinced; the reason you want to register at JavaLobby is about the same reason as why you want to buy that CD instead of just copying the MP3s, and why you want to sent some money to the FSF. And even because you give some money in the local church.
Its because _they_ made it possible for you to enjoy the luxuries you take for granted, and if not money; some respect is not out of place.

What is this world coming to..

Hmm... Please explain what precisely the JavaLobby has done to merit such "mom and apple pie" support?
