Why are we going?

Fabrizio Giudci's recent blog, Where are we going?, prompts me to ask: Why are we going?

Fabrizio is worried about where Java 7 is going and about the topics that the community perceives as the most important.

I share many of his concerns about where the language is going, but I am also wondering why the Java language is changing at all?

Are problems with Java itself prompting change?

Are external factors prompting changes to Java?

Is Java changing just to change?

I sincerly hope that the last possibility is not a big factor.

  • The reason for Java's change was very clearly explained by David Bowie some years ago:

The people from good homes are talking this year. Oooh bop. Fashion.

    (Closures) Turn to the left!
(Property keyword) Turn to the right!
    ...
We are the programming language academics and we're coming to town.

  • heh, it's good to see a blog from you again! the Java 7 buzz is so crazy that we've started to come up with new words like introvertantly vs. extrovertantly refactoring code.
