NetBeans 6 beta 2 is out!

Posted by joshy on October 23, 2007 at 06:10 PM | Comments (4)

I just wanted to let you all know that NetBeans 6 Beta 2 is out. Over the next few weeks I'll have more posts about the cool new stuff in NB 6, but for now I just want you to know it's ready for download. A whole lot of work has gone into making sure it's quality work and I think it shows. In fact, Beta 2 is now my only IDE. I've deleted every other copy of NetBeans and Eclipse from my HD. I've gone in whole hog; and freed up a lot of disk space. :)

  • Good work!

Just very sad to see so much Rails support and not even a single line of Groovy/Grails support. Groovy IS Java, so why not support the hometown hero?.. :-(

  • I don't know the details because that's not the part of NetBeans I'm involved with, but it is my understanding that there is a Groovy plugin in the works.

  • Joshy,

I don't want to start another IDE war, but I think its OK to finally feel or say that NetBeans is clearly better than Eclipse. Talking about an IDE that has truly come a long way. I mean between NetBeans 5.5 and NetBeans 6.0 m10 you can notice a big difference based on the Look and Feel (I mean usability & performance not lnf API).
I thought Milestone 10 was awesome. I'm blown away by you guys/gals, and you all have done an excellent job!

    My experience so far:
I couldn't believe how easy it is to convert my Eclipse projects into NetBeans projects in seconds or even minutes. I also, can take on an Eclipse profile so all my memorized hot keys can easily translate to NetBeans equivalents (there are times I forget that I'm in the NetBeans IDE, and using Eclipse hot keys) . I have become more productive than ever. The quality of the tutorials are exceptional and quite up to date too.

I think now, its easier to switch from Eclipse to NetBeans than it was for me switching from Internet Explorer to Fire Fox.

  • I hope that there will be proper Python / Jython support (similar to the Ruby/JRuby one) in an upcoming version. I've been working a lot with Java and recently started to use Python (and Django) in conjunction with my Java server.
Now that Jython is back in track, I hope that Sun will not miss the opportunity to attract the Python community.
