Tiger for 5, Mustang for 6, Dolphin for 7. What for 8?

We know that Tampa will host 2009 SuperBowl, Vancouver will host Olympic Games 2010 and London will host Wimbledon 2108 (unless the Antarctic ice melt sweeps British isles clean). But what about our own beloved Java Platform, Standard Edition?
So, I got to ask Sun people (Mark and Graham among them) if they already have the name for Java 8. After a short giggle, they said that they had one name in mind (without divulging it) and then asked me if i had one. They caught me off guard, but having done the homework (and looking on the list of the previous names), here is my short list of candidates.
- Flamingo
- Eagle
- Falcon
- Albatross
- Kingfisher
- Condor
- Magnolia (well, not actually a bird, but can start a nice trend)
My personal favourite would be Eagle. And here is a short list of names Sun should stay away from:
- Brazil - that will make me seriously consider going to MS
- Elephant - for the memory footprint
- Snail - for the performance
Also see this lively discussion on TSS thread.

Albatross has some negative connotations, and condor is an endangered species :-)

What about Wasp? It flies, it stings, it has a cool name! It even has a small footprint!

So good to see we're worrying more about the name of a product than what it does.
Means the product is good enough that we don't need to worry about its functionality :)

How about Bull, in memory of the marketing department?

I'm brazillian, and yes, I would not consider a good idea naming Java 8 with that word you're tired to listen every J1. :)
But, who cares? It's just the name of a country that you probaly haven't meet yet. Why don't you take some vacations? You could reconsider your opinion and starting to like dressing a green-yellow-blue flag. :)
Ah, sorry. The flag of your country doesn't have too much colors, right? You couldn't go to "Carnaval" with a two-simple color flag. And that can make your life less happy...
See ya... :P

I think it must be cheetah, as Java is looking forward to 2015.
By the by guys please dont try to plan 10 versions for the coming decade

How about something obvious like spider, or tarantula. Or another eight legged variety like octopus or calamari. It's so good you can fry it up and eat it.

camel, since by then Perl will be merged in, too. :)

I think octopus will be good, I recommend this very much, octopus has 8 legs.
Octopus symbolizes Failover ability, Extensibility, Power, Maneuverability and much more.

Tiger is to Mustang...
as Dolphin is to Sei (whale)
I actually liked Humpback better, but bloggers have far too many opinions and jokes about the JDK aleady without encouraging them.

Judging from the rumors of extreme bloat planned for Mustang, by that time Albatross will be quite appropriate.

I agree, it has to be octopus.

Goshawk would be a nice name. It's one
incredible bird of prey featured several times on National Geographic.

xod has the right idea. Each release name should be an indication of what's in it. Mustang fails in that, THAT one should have been called Stegosaur instead.
So let's reserve that name for the first unnamed release so far.
A big lumbering beast that's inexorably headed for extinction because it's gotten too large and bloated to survive in a rapidly changing world, which is what I fear Java is heading for with the worrisome trend of featurebloat which is going on (and started with 1.4...).

Somewhat frivolously - 800lb Gorilla. Seriously, Grizzly - it has been

"PRAKASH" - sanskrit word to describes the sun brightness that brings happy mood to our daily life...
Hope Java 8 bring more brightness to development community and software world...

What's the problem with Brazil?
It has almost been the name of the Java once?! If i am not wrong it becames Java for on "flavor" of coffee?! Doesn't it?! Brazil is another "flavor" of that!!
As the most active Java community in the world it would be very nice has a name of Java version as the name of my country. Although who really cares about the name of a version?!?! There are lots of things to worry about!!! Lost of time?! ;)

What do you say about "Java USA" or "JAVA BRITISH"... Can you make a homage to the Bush and the his "beautiful" war?! I think that you are stupid and donkey :) Brazil is a pacific country where Java was growing very fast... Please, never travel to Brazil... Here we don't need guys as you.
This is my opinion, like your... :-D

I suggest BADAK . It was the real Javanese phrase of a single rhinoceros horn from West Java. Javanese Rhino is an amazing and strong wild animal, but currently their population is limited and live in the natural conservation.

I suggest Colibri: it's speedy, it has small footprint (but is a bird not an insect), it's efficient (it sucks the plant saps with its long beak)...

Caribou? Caribou are large, wild, elk-like animals which can be found above the tree-line in arctic North America and Greenland. Because they can live on lichens in the winter they are very well adapted for the harsh arctic tundra where they migrate great distances each year. Caribou have unique hairs which trap air providing them with excellent insulation.

Please just use the number. For example the bug-parade is ridled with codewords "will be fixed in mumbo jumbo" unknown to the average developer or java programmer. There is no need for a secret handshake.
Oh, and please keep the marketing guys out of the picture! Please! Java 2 1.5 5.0 whatever is already bad enough.

Golden Eagle is name for Java SE 8. "Golden Eagle" flight is truly inspiring to watch. The way Golden Eagle soars upward and can see the world beneath. Java has reached Summit to be looked by awe and admiration.
