Desktop Matters - the links and more

Posted by kirillcool on March 09, 2007 at 11:15 PM | Comments (7)

The first Desktop Matters is officially over (although there still may be a few people still talking in the conference room as we speak...) First of all, many thanks and congratulations to Ben and Dion for organizing this (and making it take place 10 minutes away from where i live).

In addition, it was great finally seeing all the real people behind the java.net (and jroller) blogs (sometimes you get a weird feeling that perhaps some of them are not real, but maybe it's just me :) Thanks for everybody who came to chat, inquire about Substance and other projects and for listening to my presentation. The slides are available in the following formats:

  • (Recommended) PowerPoint 2007 - the original presentation with the animations and code comments.
  • PDF - the same presentation, but without animations and code comments.

Note that i didn't have enough time for all the slides, so even you listened to me live, there are additional 8-9 slides that go deeper into the implementation of the ghosting effects outside the button borders. And now that it's over, finally some time for a little entertainment.

  • Kirill, your talk gave a lot of insight on how to accomplish cool effects on swing, I'm so glad that you made it to DM.

  • Thanks, Andres. I was very glad to be there.

  • Do you mean you actually payed Microsoft a few hundred dollars for the new crappy Office. Please publish your file using a open format.

And just so everybody now... it takes you an average of 3 work days to pay for a Windows license, in my country it takes an average of 3 months. Software is not a commodity, but vendors insist on keeping a world wide pricing policy (this of course is the reason for piracy). To stop the piracy, and preserve everybody's money, do not you crappy software from Microsoft, Especially Office which is extremelly overpriced.

  • But I want to see the animations, and I did not meant to tell you what to do with your money (I just do not want to be forced on how to spend mine, I wanted to say why).
    Sorry if I offended you.

  • levmatta - so if you don't have the new Office, how do you know it's crappy? Just because it's made by Microsoft? Did you actually install the trial version (60 days free) and use it? And thankfully, software is still a commodity, because otherwise i wouldn't be able to pay my bills.

  • levmatta - Microsoft provides a free viewer for PowerPoint. Google for "PowerPoint Viewer 2007" ;)
