JEE: The Official Acronym for Java Enterprise Edition

Posted by marinasum on July 31, 2006 at 03:43 PM | Comments (4)

An interesting article that clarifies the proper acronym for Java Enterprise Edition appeared on GCN recently. So it's JEE, not Java EE (or J2EE, absolutely not). Makes sense to me even though it'll take me a while to condition myself.

Already, journalists are using the proper acronym: See a recent article on The Register, JEE—No Funeral Planned. That commentary is worth a look, by the way, because it delineates the observations made by Karen Tegan Padir, Sun VP of engineering for Java enterprise products, on why complexity is a fact of life in JEE, given that it's a platform for across-the-board applications.

  • hey Marina, what's up with that: Java EE, not JEE ?

  • I also think it's Java EE - even the link in the referred article always says Java EE. Guess you can't believe everything you see on the net (go, wikipedia ;)

  • Are you sure about this? At least as of a few months ago, people were being actively discouraged from using JEE, and were told to always use JavaEE. Hell, a Sun marketing gal even sent me some freebies for explicitly advocating JavaEE instead of JEE! Either Karen needs to talk to the marktoids, or needs to make sure that a consistent message is put out. If Sun can't sort it out, how can we mere mortals?!

  • Who the hell is GCN? Guys Can't Name?

The correct name is Java EE. Period. That article is so innacurated that the link it provides it provides (Java EE Technologies At a Glance) has Java EE in the title and URL :-)

In fact, I'm forwarding below (with proper authorization from a SMI representative) a message sent a couple of weeks ago to the SMI Licensees list:

    Subject: Java Platform Naming Convention
    To: SMI-JavaLicenseeEngineering

Back in 2005, Sun Microsystems announced a new Java naming convention,
whereby future versions of the platform would be called
“Java EE 5,” “Java SE 6," and “Java ME.”

However, over the last year we have noticed that a few members of the
Java community are using “JEE” and "JME," rather than
“Java EE” and Java ME." Unfortunately "JEE" has different meanings that
are not associated with Java technology. For example, a Google search on
"JEE" returns topics unrelated to Java EE.

We'd like to encourage you to spell out “Java” - i.e. Java EE, Java SE,
and Java ME – especially in external communications, such as websites
    and blogs.

Please take a few minutes to understand the reasons for the new naming
schema, which are spelled out in this article.

Also, take advantage of the resources available, including the FAQs, and
the 1-pager with the naming guidelines at the bottom of the page.

Thank you, Java community, for your support! Use the Java name and keep
    growing your momentum.
