Tiger on Tiger ?

Posted by mhadley on April 12, 2005 at 08:14 AM | Comments (5)

Apple just announced a release date for Mac OS 10.4 Tiger. Surfing around the site I encountered this page linked from the technical specifications page which seems to indicate that it will ship with J2SE 1.4.2 rather than J2SE 5.0 as expected. I really hope this is an out of date page that got missed when the site was updated.

  • A developer preview appears to be available for persons running Tiger (the mac os):

It looks like Java 1.5 (or 5.0, I can't keep it straight) will be available as a separate download for Mac OS X 10.4 only. This rollout strategy may be an effort to ensure backward compatibility.

  • Thanks, I didn't see that. I followed the link but there's nothing there yet, hopefully something we be available by the time Mac OS Tiger ships. Still, its a pity that J2SE 5.0 isn't included as standard.

  • I suggest you join Apple Developer Connection at the free "Online" level. When Java 1.4.1 was a developer preview, it was released for download at that level.

  • I'm already a member of ADC, when I visited the Java downloads section earlier today there was nothing for J2SE 5.0 yet.

  • Ok, I see. "ADC Select and Premier members receive pre-release builds of many Apple technologies." Not "Online" members, apparently.

Maybe something will change after release.
