No, this entry is not about Java but you can hear all about Java at the upcoming JavaOne and at CommunityOne.

Elsewhere, I have written about paper as a user interface technology.

Someone else, in a Norwegian TV comedy show, had worked on the idea years earlier. I couldn't help but post their concept of a medieval helpdesk here.

Here it is from YouTube, including the manual:

Here, it is from BoreMe:

Full Java Stack in Ubuntu

Let's follow Ludo's example, and get the full Java stack, including Java DB (Sun's Apache Derby distribution) for our Ubuntu systems. It is easy: System|Administration|UpdateManager!

Beginning with Ubuntu 7.04, you get the full Java stack for Linux gathered in one place. I remember learning about Java first on both Solaris (the Sparc stations sitting in the math department at Berkeley) and on Linux (the PCs in a basement office in the industrial engineering department). The tradition continues into "sudo apt-get"! While I'm writing about Java, I should probably remind you about CommunityOne, the free event during this year's JavaOne.

How often does one have the opportunity to learn about a whole software ecosystem for free?

You might be a JBoss, a Weblogic or a Websphere developer but you should not miss the Glassfish Day.

On Monday, May 7, the day before the 2007 JavaOne Conference, the GlassFish Community is hosting a FREE companion event at the Moscone Center. See how the GlassFish Application Server continues to lead with the latest technology. Learn from the experts about what's new and what's coming: modularization, scripting language support, Web 2.0 features, and more. Hear how others are already putting GlassFish into action with large-scale production deployments.

There will also be keynotes by Jonathan Schwartz, President and CEO of Sun Microsystems, and Rich Green, Sun's Executive Vice President for Software. Space is limited. So register now!

Or consider the Glassfish Beta Contest. Read about it here.

Tune in to Simon Phipps' SDNtv's special program on open source databases where senior database engineers at Sun speak about free, open-source databases embedded and bundled in Sun products:

Josh Berkus speaks about PosgreSQL, MySQL and Sun's open source database group.

Rick Hillegas (Apache/Derby committer) talks to Simon about Apache/Derby's history, community work and uses of Derby.

Francois Orsini explains the relationship between Java DB and Apache/Derby and describes some example applications for this pure-Java database.

Lots of material gets covered in these three short, video interviews!
