Mustang: Experts Wanted

Posted by mreinhold on March 02, 2005 at 09:34 PM | Comments (8)

JSR 270, the umbrella JSR for J2SE 6.0 ("Mustang"), was resoundingly approved by the JCP Executive Committee for J2SE/J2EE earlier this week.

The expert group already has some initial members; we'll be accepting additional applications through Monday, 14 March. We won't be able to accept every application, of course, since we'll need to strike a balance between having broad representation from the community and having a manageable group that can make decisions in real time. If you'd like to help guide the future direction of the platform, please consider applying to join.

  • What skills or experience would make one a good candidate for the JSR270 expert group? Should EG members have experience with umbrella JSR's? :)

  • The most important qualification is experience with the J2SE platform that's
generally broad but also deep in at least a few areas. Having participated in
    a past umbrella JSR isn't a prerequisite.

  • What sort of legal restrictions exist on participants? Is it still a NDA-encumbered process, is it possible to participate for developers active on free runtimes, etc ...

While I wouldn't mind lending a hand to fix some of the issues free runtime implementors run into with the specs, or the process itself, it would be good to know in advance if that's possible before applying :)

  • To participate in the Mustang EG as an individual you'd need to either join the
JCP or become an "individual expert" for just this one JSR. Either route
    requires signing an
    agreement which covers
confidentiality, IP rights, etc. I'm not a lawyer, so I won't attempt
    to summarize those documents here.

  • Mark, what sort of time commitment are you expecting?

Posted by: dwalend on March 07, 2005 at 06:58 AM

  • Two to four hours per week, but it's likely not to be uniformly distributed.

  • Is there something that summarizes them in the context of the JSR270 in particular? It would be good for people to know what they are getting themselves into.

  • I actually listed some things I wanted in Java 6.0 actually its a pretty short list since Java 5.0 was good enough as it is for the most part.

But I don't think I'd even be considered even if I did apply. Assuming my company would let me as well.
