Java on OS X, it's not dead...

Posted by robogeek on June 13, 2007 at 01:51 PM | Comments (7)

In the I'm not dead yet category we have Java on Mac OS X Leopard to be 64-bit, resolution independent talking about Java sessions at WWDC. He says the WWDC program guide has statements about the Java that's to be included in Leopard (10.5) will be 64 bit and include support for various core OS X technologies such as resolution independence. Sounds cool, and sounds like possible justifications for the delay in getting Java 6 out, and sounds like probable reasoning as to why Java 6 for 10.4 won't work.

  • Excellent. Yet it doesn't explain the completely unresponsive, unhelpful, and unreasonable attitude that Apple has shown towards Java developers to this point. Apple gets a D- grade for not letting developers know something before now. Damned irresponsible and infuriating in my opinion.

  • And if i understand correctly, whoever goes to that session will not be able to discuss what was said there.

  • And that is the sad truth Kirill :( However, I'm hoping that Apple will at least publish some new details about thier upcoming Java implementation in the coming days. It's been FAR too quiet for FAR too long!

  • Amen! But I think Apple has had issues with this transparency thing for ages and ages and ages. I wonder how much the shift to open source computing is going to affect them, unless they learn to be more transparent?

  • Regardless of what wonders they're planning for J6 on 10.5, they should still come out with a J6 for 10.4, even without the new features. Rather, something that is compatible with the current J6 so other J6 code can run on it seemlessly.

  • I agree, sounds cool. But it is all overshadowed by the whole secrecy and keeping everyone in the dark crap. I mean, come on. We're talking about a relatively minor software upgrade (in the scheme of things), not some brand new product that will give a company a competitive edge. It is their right to do this- it is their company and they can do whatever they want. But it seems like a bad idea to alienate developers, especially when you have a minority of the OS market and really need all the developers you can get writing 3rd party software.

  • Actually, although I agree with the sentiment (language development should be out in the open). I think you guys need some perspective. The perspective in question is that Apple is treating their own flagship language (Objective-C) in exactly the same way. All the language evolution is secret squiirel stuff done behind closed doors.
