Sun Wants Middleware To Go Away?

Java Developer Journal is running a press release, er, article about Sun's latest marcom that "Middleware is History". I suppose this phrase is in reaction to IBM's "Middleware is Everywhere" (witness the dueling billboards on Highway 101), but I don't think they're sending a positive message. The followups posted to this article are near universally negative.
I realize that Sun is going through some tough times and are trying to reposition themselves, but I'm afraid they're hurting Java more than helping it as they go through these various jyrations.
We need less confusion in the market about the future of Java and J2EE, not more. Redmond must just love this stuff.

Objectivity
Even worse is that this obvious self-serving promotion is the coverstory of the print edition of JDJ. After reading it, I had no better idea of how we'd move beyond middleware, and was left disgusted at JDJ's apparent lack of objectivity. I'd accept this as a commentary, but the cover story?!?
Is this an increasing problem with trade journals? Pick up a copy of BEA Weblogic Developer's Journal, and you'd sure think so (it's publisher, Sys-Con Media, claims it is not "affliated with the companies or products covered in [the magazine]," yet half the articles are written by BEA employees. I've got a copy of the May 2003 issue on my desk, and the cover lists a "Product Spotlight" on Wily Introscope. Turn to the article, and you see it's written by...an employee of Wily Technologies.
To be fair, WDJ does clearly state the author's affiliation, but with a title, "Product Spotlight," you'd expect an honest product review. Just as you'd expect better of a cover story than this.

Empty Article
This is another rehash of the idea that it's not about technology, it's about business. This is, of course, absolutely true, but I think more developers realize it than these visionaries and "software czars" think. Strange how they can "predict" the future but can't guage how well Joe Coder understands the reality of business.
Add to this the fact that the article is, as has been pointed out, a press release for Sun product and you have a brilliant example of Sun shooting themselves in the foot.
