Team Lead,

Greeting and Introduction

I am excited to be a member of the java.net blogging crew. This is my first posting
so I would like to introduce myself a little.

My name is Shuna Wu and I work at internationalization(I18N) area, JavaSE Quality
Engineering team as a team lead. We are responsible for testing many supported lang-
uages(writing systems), and more locales on java.text&java.util areas. Java SE I18N
testing faces its special challenges. We not only need to understand Java SE func-
tionalities like other software QA engineers, but also we need to have a great
expertise to be able to understand how the features work in variety of the user's
native countries, regions, or cultures. So far, we have been developing our Global
Suite for testing the supported languages, and we have automated them
as much as possible.

My intention to blog is
- to share with you how we test Java SE I18N and our testing experiences accumulated
- to also communicate with you the challenges and some difficulties we met, discuss
  the possible solutions with you
- to listen to you about the feedback you have when you are using Java SE I18N and
what is your propose on the improvements
- to introduce I18N new features in the new version of Java SE
  6(Mustang) through my blogging
  ...

I would like to invite you to work together on Java SE to enable it a highly reliable,
functional, perform well and high quality product. I hope to build up a bridge with
all Chinese users around the world and listen to you on the issues you meet and
feedback you have. I will be happy if I can help you address your issues.

  • Hi Shuna,

I am building an internationalized app, and just integrated a Simplified Chinese translation last week. While most of the app/layout still looks great with the Chinese text (thanks to FormLayout) there is unfortunately one bug that is affecting a few of my panel layouts: it seems that the word and/or line BreakIterator for Chinese text does not work properly, which means that certain HTML JLabels that wrap fine for English text do not wrap at all with Chinese text. For example, a string of 20 English words can be broken into multiple lines at any word boundary, but Java seems to be treating a string of 20 Chinese characters as a single word.

This may be related to bug 4095325 (Need special word-break tables for Chinese). Unfortunately that bug was reported in 1997, and it has somehow been listed as an RFE instead of a bug, so it doesn't seem like it will be fixed anytime soon. Do you have any info on when we can expect a fix, or any suggestions for a workaround?

    Thanks!Daniel

  • Hi Shuna, This is a test comment so we can test what we talked about yesterday. Of course we're test engineers so we're going to test the weblogs, eh? -- David

  • Daniel,

Sorry that I didn't response to your question soon.
For the issue you arised on BreakIterator, you are right it is related to RFE4095325. Yet, we don't have a plan for this soon and at this moment, there isn't a workaround also.
BTW, not only Chinese but also Japanese needs a better implementation for BreakIterator.

I have communicated this issue to our engineering team. Will update you if there is any news on this.

    thanks,
    shuna
