Beta Release of Open-Source Jini

Posted by slohmeier on March 30, 2005 at 03:09 AM | Comments (3)

About one year after first discussions about changing Jini licensing at the 7th Jini Community Meeting the first release of the Jini Starter Kit is available under an ASL2 license. In addition Sun provides a Patent Non-Assertion Covenant for Jini.

But that's not the only news about this release. It is also a release that tackles the deployment problems users of Jini did often face. It comes with an installer that does various environment checks and is able to start Jini services when the installation finished. Also new features have been added to Jini that were shaped by the community, such as an extension of the JavaSpaces service and an extension of the EventMailbox service that allows RemoteEvents to be delivered through firewalls.

So we look forward for an exiting year in the Jini community! The Starter Kit is available for download at http://starterkit.jini.org/ for evaluation and feedback (it's a beta!).

  • Clarification Please

The ASL2 only covers the starter kit right? Isn't the rest of the Jini technology still covered under the extremely oppressive Jini Technology Specific Attachment:

    http://www.sun.com/software/jini/licensing/SCSL3_JiniTSA1.html
(The quintessential: "All your code are belong to us" license)

If this is the case; wouldn't that be rather disingenuous on the part of the Jini team?

I mean, it would be rather like telling kids they can have their first hit of crack for free.
