Oh, the wonders of the tech press...

I attended the JavaPro Magazine awards ceremony earlier this evening. It was possibly the most surreal moment I have ever experienced in the Java world...

First, WebLogic won an award as the "best visual java component". Now, the only problem with that is, WebLogic isn't one. Then, Oracle JDeveloper won the "best mobile development toolkit". The only problem there is that Oracle actually has no mobile tools.

I'm really not sure whether to laugh or cry.

It would be nice if I could say something alarming like, "the foxes are guarding the chicken coop." But it's more like the turkeys are guarding the chicken coop.

The next time you hear anything is "award winning," contemplate how astonishingly little that actually means.

Oh, and I'm running to be Miss America. Surely if we all band together and place a few ads, we'll be able to get past the gender issue. I'm taking contributions...and if I really, really have to I'll shave...

-Now this is just a kick in the face, anyone that has done mobile java programming know that netbeans Mobility Pack is by far the best toolkit available.

I'm crying with laughter. Not only are the turkeys guarding the coop but it appears they are the majority. Figure our industry is getting bigger and dumber every year!

  • The hype industry isn't about to let a minor detail, like reality, spoil the party.

If NetBeans wants an award, they simply have to purchase advertising space in JavaPro; just like all the other 'winners'.

  • My experience is that Reader's Choice awards are very unscientific polls. I don't know the details of the JavaPro variant; see my note last year on the JDJ award.

  • Ironic, as today the netbeans news shows netbeans winning a "codie". Sheesh. Codie? Who makes this stuff up?

  • you still think there is any substance in hype? Web 2.0? SOAP replacing everything else? Or Ajax? Or XML as a programming language? And you actually believed magazines were impartial and don't hand out "awards" based purely on who pays them the most?

  • I take your general point about reader's polls; but I have to mention that JDeveloper does have a mobile toolkit:

I can't comment on how good it is, just that it exists.

  • It isn't that surprising. I've noticed this same trend in the Java Vendors Journal "Reader's Choice Awards" over the past couple of years. It's baffling how some products even get nominated into these categories.

  • Maybe they meant the ability of JDeveloper to develop mobile user interfaces using JSF. You actually get a visual editing environment that lets you build an interface for a mobile device.
