J2EE SDK 1.4 Enthusiasm or Ennui?

This session is formally titled "Java 2 Platform Enteprise Edition (J2EE) Software Development Kit (J2EE 1.4 SDK) Overview ( TS-1951)." I arrived about a half hour late, (writing up this morning's technical keynote took a lot longer than I thought), so I missed the entire first half.

This was a well attended session. It was held in one of the larger conference rooms, and it was about two-thirds full. I didn't sense a great deal of energy in the room. Perhaps people were in rapt attention thinking deep thoughts about enterprise beans. Or maybe this was evidence that post-lunchtime sleepiness was setting in among the crowd.

The presenters were J2EE architect Tony Ng, product line manager Paul Ko, and engineer Paul Dochez. Tony and Paul gave the normal talk-to-the slides kind of presentation. Dochez did a nice demo that showed the J2EE 1.4 SDK running with NetBeans 3.6 on a Mac. Dochez said that this was the first time anyone had seen this. I'm not sure what the "this" is, but I suspect it's the conjunction of the SDK and this version of the IDE on the Mac. Dochez demonstrated a number of things. I was impressed by how easy it is to build a web page that includes JSP tags. I was also impressed with the NetBeans 3.6 debugging features. Dochez showed how to set up the application to run in the IDE's debugger. Apparently this took a little longer to get going than Dochez had anticipated, but once it started, it was pretty impressive. You could see the application state (including things like the values assigned to variables) on a statement-by-statement basis.

I had hoped to hear a lot of good questions and answers. Ko solicited questions, but few came from the audience, and those folks who did ask questions didn't expend the energy to walk over to one of the standing microphones on the floor. So it was almost impossible to hear the questions. Ko did try to paraphrase, but it was also hard to hear him. I think one question was about support for fast web services. I think Ko's said that support is not in the J2EE 1.4 SDK (but coming in a later release?). Another question was about GUIs for monitoring -- right now there is only a command line for monitoring. I think I heard Ng answer that the next version of the J2EE SDK will provide a GUI for monitoring. By this time the audience was streaming out of the room, and the public Q&A session turned into a private session between the presenters and a few folks who went up to the stage. So if there were some interesting questions and answers about the J2EE 1.4 SDK, I didn't hear them.

As I left the room I thought, were these people enthused about the J2EE 1.4 SDK? Hard to tell. Clearly they were enthused about the cold soda that awaited them as they entered the hallway.
