One thing I really like about Linux is the ability to choose wheter to antialias fonts or not based on the size. I always use it, since I find antialiasing disturbing at normal size, but I like it once the fonts reaches the size of 15-17 points. I find the fonts in the pictures you posted harder to read than the non antialiased ones I have on my screen...
