However, in both cases, the license conditions apply only if they are distributing the combined works. (selling or giving away) For in-house use, they are under no obligation.

If you are considering the LGPL, I would suggest visiting my project's license page. It took quite a while to formulate, and I was fortunate enough to receive a lot of helpful feedback from Richard Stallman, author of the LGPL. It is my attempt to formulate the LGPL obligations, in direct Java terminology.
