At face-value: I happen to be using a Windows XP system, and I found these things they call "Power Toys" on Microsoft.com. They are software. Among others, there is a ClearType Tuning control panel addition. It gives you one or two tweaks to try changing from the defaults. I use it and actually wound up setting it away from the defaults to wind up with better results. There is a seemingly wide-ish range on the settings. You may find some usefulness in it.
