That should not be true, for the very reason the design guidelines exist. You should be able to follow the design guidelines and make a perfectly understandable UI for any user that way. You do not have to "sit back and give up" your preferences for the user. The OS L&F is provided by the OS, and the applications that associate with it. An ISV has no obligation to follow any rules. If you feel you're going to get dumped if you provide a custom L&F, you may not have studied design guidelines enough to have confidence yet in making something the user will like. Apps are provided by companies other than the ones providing the computer, and users like your angle on things. The internet is a testament to that.
