This was a thought provoking article, and much of what you said will still take a while to digest. Most of my work is in embedded Java systems, often dealing with hardware I/O devices on J2ME/CLDC or other "small" controllers. We typically support a sensor or actuator board on more than one Java platform. Naturally we want the code to be easily maintained, and abstracted in such a way that we can fuss with the lower layers in the I/O drivers without upsetting the consumers of our APIs. You've given me some new food for thought!
