Eduardo Pelegri-Llopart is a Distinguished Engineer at Sun in the area of Web Services and XML. Eduardo has been involved in a number of open source efforts, starting with XEmacs (nee Lucid Emacs) many years ago. He was also involved in Tomcat (has been the lead of most of the JSP specifications), jakarta-taglibs and other Apache efforts.

You can try FastInfoset with JAX-RPC: The just released JWSDP 1.6 includes a version of JAX-RPC 1.1 that supports the FastInfoset standard. Our internal benchmarks show very nice improvements but it would be nice to know how it works for you...

The FI Project - An Open Source Implementation of a Binary XML Standard: Sun has released under Open Source its implementation of Fast Infoset, an in-progress standard for Binary XML. Fast Infoset is simple to use and to integrate; you can think of it as GZIP for XML. This implementation is intended to be a high quality implementation to be used in production artifacts and we hope it will encourage wide adoption of the standard.

Using JAXP 1.3; even in older JVMs!: JAXP 1.3 is the latest release of the Java API for XML processing and it is part of Tiger. Tiger is great, but, what do you do if you can't switch to Tiger right away?

Tiger Snapshots: bringing early feedback into the release cycle...: Mark Reinhold has just announced that Tiger snapshots are now available. Check them out. I'm very happy that we are seing more and more products from Sun following this early access approach; this can just improve the quality of the products.

Simple, Fast, no-Loss binary XML - Fast Infoset: What can you do if you would want to use XML but you are having performance problems? Binary encodings have been proposed and investigated for a while but they have yet to gain real adoption. Here is a proposed standard that delivers substantial performance benefits without losing the benefits of XML. Think of it as an improved GZIPed XML...

What is in JWSDP 1.4...: Sun has announced that it will release JWSDP 1.4 in the very near future. New features in this release include support for additional containers and support for two key news specs: BP 1.1 with Attachements Profile 1.0 from WS-I and Web Services Security from OASIS. Stay tuned to this channel for the actual release of the bits.

Distance in the Internet... Time Zones and Geos: What does it mean to be "far away" in the internet? My experience is that distance in the internet is more a function of time zones than of geography. When the time zones distance is big enough, email exchanges take days and teleconferences and IM don't work. So, what works?
