Reminiscing on Micro-Kernels and Group Communications

Yes, I have to admit that, in my opinion, JGroups is probably the best early example of the "micro-kernel" concept in Java, aesthetically speaking.

The Group Communications stack can simply be specified by literally stacking micro-protocols into a group communications stack

Yes, indeed. Larry Peterson who originally started this communications-oriented operating systems work later moved to Princeton: http://www.cs.princeton.edu/~llp/ The work on Scout was also one of the leading projects funded by DARPA's quorum project. So, thanks very much for the reminder and the pointer.
