This is the first edition of a new column I'll be writing each weekend titled "java.net: the Week in Review." In the column, I'll present all of the previous week's Java Today news items, a selection of java.net blog posts, polls, and spotlights. I'll organize the presentation by categorizing the featured news items, so if, for example, your interest is JavaEE and GlassFish, you'll be...

Mobility

In May Google and Willow Garage announced the first pure-Java implementation of ROS - Willow Garage's Robotic Operating System. Called “rosjava”, the new library is still at alpha level, but it is clear from their forge that active development continues. Android is is well suited for robotic applications with its support of audio, accelerometers, GPS, cameras...

The PHP Cross Platform Web Applications course I teach in HIT coveres some of the newest web technologies. The next meeting covers Sencha Touch. It is a Java Script library that allows us to develop web applications optimized for touch screen devices, such as mobile telephones and tablets. In order to assist my students with the understanding of this topic I chose to create two video clips that...

When the iPhone came to market, Sun Microsystems announced that there soon will be Java for the iPhone. They got stopped by Apple's licence terms, which ban both, interpreted languages and code written in other language than C, C++, Objective C and JavaScript. Lately I read in the news that Apple change the licence terms, and found a promising statement on Apple's web site, so now...

Ian Bogost's recent article Flash is Not a Right highlights some new aspects of the debate about Apple's iPhoneOS development restrictions. I have a different opinion. I understand Ian's pain as a teacher. Programmers who aren't curious, don't like to explore varied languages and paradigms, are doomed to rank-and-file roles. But this is secondary. The purpose of computing is to serve the needs of...

On the Java ME SDK Team Blog, Tomas Brandalik provides First aid when emulator doesn't start: We have got few bug reports about not starting emulator. After some research we would like to summarize possible causes. 1. Freshly installed windows doesn't have msvcrtXX.dlls. Got to folder runtimes\cdc-hi\bin and copy Microsoft.VC80.CRT into runtimes\cldc-hi-javafx\bin. This problem will be fixed...

UPDATES: Dec-23-2009: At the time of this post some, but not all, wikis and forums had been brought back up. I am told that now all forums and wikis are fully operational. However, there are still some problems posting to java.net blogs from external blogging clients - this is being worked on. After the attack last week java.net now has been restored and should be (mostly) functional, including...

LWUIT was created in the Java ME world to solve an old problem related to the different UI components rendering by different mobiles. This introduction to MIDP UI can help you to understand. From the LWUIT project: Writing appealing cross device applications today in Java ME is challenging. Due to implementation differences in fonts, layout, menus, etc. the same application may look and behave...

Yes, there is a DateField component for LWUIT and it is ready for use! It is localized too! It was created by Marlon Luz from IndT, Manaus, Brazil, and the Tranqueira Project is using it. With this DateField it is very easy to configure date formats and check for a valid day, month and year and fix these values, if there is something wrong with them. Because I guess it is not interesting to show...

On Thursday I head up to London for the Over the Air event. I'll do two talks on Saturday on LWUIT and JavaFX Mobile. Check out the draft schedule. Plenty of interesting topics - I attended Over the Air last year and it was a fun, down-to-earth developer event. I'm looking forward to it. Maybe I'll see you there? Cheers, -- Terrence Reminder: If you haven't done so yet, please update...
