MEP - A Cool, New Mobile Platform for the Enterprise and your Phone

This summer we released the first version of an exciting new Mobile Platform, the Sun Java System Mobile Enterprise Platform (MEP). MEP is designed to make it easy for developers to create client/connector pairs that securely synchronize any data to your MIDP/CLDC mobile device and allow offline data creation and edit and online synchronization with the back-end data store or application. I would say that this has been my most interesting development project at Sun since I worked on the first version of the J2EE platform. There are many challenges to developing mobile synchronization platform that is robust, secure and device agnostic. In MEP 1.0 we met these challenges and produced a platform that offers secure offline data access and entry, and secure online synchronization of any enterprise data from any mobile device that supports MIDP 2.0 and JSR-75 (PDA file system access).

You can download MEP for free and get started developing your mobile data access solution today. There are two end-to-end sample applications that come with the download ready to use. The first is an example of connecting to a MySQL or Oracle database and synchronizing with a table in the database which contains music album information. The second sample is an example of connecting to a Siebel CRM system and synchronizing with Account records. Ryan and Santiago of the MEP development team have written blogs on developing MEP clients and developing MEP connectors using the MCBO (Mobile Client Business Object) API and the ECBO (Enterprise Connector Business Object) API.
