OSCON 2012 kicks off today!

I've been in Portland since Friday afternoon. OSCON week is always one of my favorites - Community Leadership Summit on Saturday and Sunday, and then I start my OSCON experience with Ignite talks this evening.

If you haven't heard of the Community Leadership Summit, it's an unconference that Jono Bacon from Ubuntu started a few years ago. It's a great chance to meet other people who do what I do, both in open source and in other kinds of online and in-person communities. This year highlights for me were a discussion of badging and reputation system (which we're working on launching here on, and the pitfalls associated with them. I learned a lot from some folks who saw theirs go off the rails the first time. I also attended sessions on cultivating good speakers for events, how to manage a community/staff remotely. If you have taken on leading a community of any kind, from a JUG to a message board, I highly recommend considering attending next year.

OSCON is a little different for me this year - I'm here with Tori (you may know her as @java) and Tonya, Assistant Community Manager here at We're here as media partners and will be blogging about the sessions and putting coverage in the next issue of Java Magazine (if you haven't subscribed yet, you should). I'm planning to attend the Ignite talk tonight, a tutorial or two tomorrow, and then sessions mostly on the Java track and the Community track.

Tori and I will be staffing the Oracle booth Tuesday night during the Expo Reception and Wednesday night during the booth crawl. Come by and say hello, and grab a t-shirt or a Duke toy.
